Colorado State turned the ball over 14 times, leading to 19 points for San Francisco
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State knew it wasn't going to be easy and that it would be a battle on Saturday afternoon in Moby Arena.
Â
The Rams (6-4) suffered their first loss of the season while on their home court, 73-62, to San Francisco on Saturday. USF had just two losses on the season, coming from a pair of Pac-12 teams and it already defeated San Diego State last week. CSU turned the ball over 14 times, which San Francisco turned into 19 points, including 12 points in the third frame off five turnovers.
Â
McKenna Hofschild led the team with 26 points and dishing out six assists. The guard took just two 3-point attempts, making one, as San Francisco locked down the perimeter. CSU finished shooting 25 percent from behind the arc – 4-of-16. Destiny Thurman also reached double figures for the Rams with 14 points, adding a team-high three blocks and six boards.
Â
San Francisco's two leading scorers combined for 50 points as the Dons finish shooting 42 percent from the floor. USF totaled 16 offense boards, which led to just nine second-chance points.
Â
USF jumped out to the early lead and build a 12-point advantage in the first quarter. Colorado State responded to the Dons' fast-pace of play in the second, outscoring San Francisco 20-10 to lead by one at the break, 34-33. Both teams were stalling to start the second half, but CSU built its largest lead of the game with six at 43-37 with 6:27 left in the third quarter.
Â
From there, San Francisco went on a 10-0 run to retake the lead – one it wouldn't lose again. Colorado State scored a game-low 11 points in the final 10 minutes as it had multiple scoring droughts throughout, making just 4-of-13 attempts.
Â
The Rams will have the coming week off to study for finals before hosting Regis on Tuesday, Dec. 19 as their final non-conference game. Colorado State will start league play after the holidays, hosting Fresno State in the opener on Dec. 29.
