Leach was deeply impactful in the lives of the Colorado State coaching staff.
Colorado State Football, and its coaching staff which has been deeply impacted by the life and legacy of coach Mike Leach, joins the football community in mourning the passing of a coaching icon.
"Mike Leach was an offensive pioneer who changed the game of football, but more than that, he was deeply influential on the professional and personal lives of our coaching staff.
Football is forever changed, and our coaches are forever better people, for Coach Leach's impact on it. His courage and independence has been an inspiration for us all. As a mentor and a friend, he will be terribly missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Coach's family, the Mississippi State program, and the entire football community as we mourn his passing."
Mike Leach was alongside Hal Mumme, father of Associate Head Coach/Quarterbacks Coach Matt Mumme, through his rise in college football and the creation of the Air Raid offense. Leach joined Mumme's staff in 1989 at Iowa Wesleyan and remained on staff together for a decade through 1998 at the University of Kentucky. Along the way, Leach intersected with head coach Jay Norvell as well as the Colorado State program at the 2013 New Mexico bowl when he served as the head coach at Washington State.Â
