Rams Continue to Build Toward Championships

Team sets three school records at two separate venues
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. // AMES, Iowa – No matter where Rams were located on Saturday, positive results were produced, with a trio of school records established and a pair of event wins.
Â
Colorado State's indoor track and field teams divided and conquered, with the distance crew heading to the Iowa State Classic, while the rest of the Rams took part in the Don Kirby Invitational. Those who had to run the farthest were the first to start rewrite the program's record book as the men and women took on the mile Saturday, nailing down a victory and a school record at the Lied Recreation Athletic Facility.
Â
Megan Mooney and Anna Petr both went into the race with the idea of attacking the school record, set back in 2002 by Katie Yemm. Both achieved their goal, but it's Mooney's name who now stands atop the list as her 4:41.24 was the fastest by a collegian in the race, putting her fourth overall behind a trio of professionals. Petr finished seventh, posting a 4:42.56 which now stands second all time.
Â
"They definitely ran well. They both went under the school record, which is pretty exciting," CSU distance coach Art Siemers said. "It was a tough race because there was a rabbit and three professional runners who were a little bit ahead of them, so they had to kind of time it and be smart. They didn't want to go out too hard, but they wanted to make sure they were engaged in the race at the same time. They did a good job."
Â
Their male teammates didn't take down the school record, but Jacob Brueckman came back with the victory in a time of 4:01.15, a personal record which now puts him third all-time at CSU. Tom Oates was just behind him, running the fourth-fastest time at CSU, a 4:02.21.
Â
Brueckman ranked 11th at the school when the day started, Oates 16th. Now, they have times which put them on the cusp of becoming just the third and fourth Rams to break the 4-minute barrier in school history.
Â
"The pace was a little bit slow, and they were a little bit back early, but they moved up toward the end to go 1-2," Siemers said. "I think it sets them up really well for conference."
Â
At the Albuquerque Convention Center, where the Mountain West Championships will be held Feb. 24-26, the Rams tallied a win from Ryan Birkmeier in the 800 meters, running a 1:50.80, the seventh-best time in CSU history. In the 400, Tom Willems placed second, breaking the school record in the process with his 46.51. The women did their part, as pole vaulter Celyn Stermer rewrote the school record with her 13-6.25 to place fifth.
Â
"It was great to get into the facility and create some comfort level in that space," CSU head track coach Brian Bedard said. "We had some kids make some mistakes and we've got to learn from that and coach them up, but it was the first time some of our kids were running on the banked 200-meter track they have there, so it's a bit different. Not all indoor tracks are the same.
Â
"Ryan, Tom and Celyn, in their own right, they all competed with a lot of composure and executed well. They were extremely competitive, and it's great to see those kinds of highlights. It's great to see at this time of the season."
Â
In addition, Lauren Gale hit the Canadian indoor 200 record, adding to a string of great results.
Â
In all, the Rams collected 37 school marks with an additional 19 personal records. Seeing those improvements at this time of the season is encouraging to the coaching staff with the championships looming.
Â
"It is, and I think that's exciting for our team," Bedard said. "It's good to build some momentum going into conference. That's what we're looking for this weekend. Our coaching staff knows, and I think the athletes know, this is an important weekend on our calendar. We all finalize our conference roster, and we try to have the kids ready to compete at this meet. When we see a lot of good things happen at this point, it's a good sign."
