Junior Lauren Gale Sets Canadian Record in NCAA 400m Final

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Earning her first career NCAA All-America First Team honor, Lauren Gale placed eighth in the 400-meter final Saturday at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The margin from the NCAA Champion, Talitha Diggs of Florida, to Gale was not even a second - .66th of one. The difference from third place to Gale was a mere .15th of a second, making assistant coach J.J. Riese wonder how this race stacks up historically in the closeness of the times. Research for another day perhaps, but there was much still to celebrate as Gale's 51.64 time broke the Canadian record.

All eight runners who raced in Saturday's final obtained NCAA All-America First Team accolades after advancing from the field of 16 total competitors. On Friday, Lauren Gale clocked a 52.17 to take the seventh spot out of the 16 runners and advance to Saturday's final. She finished second in the third heat behind the top qualifier Charokee Young of Texas A&M at 51.70. Of the four semifinal heats, the winners plus the next four-best times moved on to Saturday's final.

The Ontario, Canada native owns Colorado State's indoor 400m record at 51.53 which she set at the Colorado Invitational on Jan 29th. CU's facility didn't meet Canada's record book standards, so it didn't qualify. Next week, Gale will travel with Team Canada competing on the 4x400-meter relay team at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

From their Prospective
Assistant Coach J.J. Riese - Sprints
"The race was super tight. I'm interested in going back in the history books to see if there's been a tighter finish from not only first to second but third to eighth, which was just .15th of a second. She was a little frustrated that she couldn't run her second lap like she wanted to, but she was in the back and had a lot of traffic. That's how it goes though sometimes, and it is nothing to be ashamed about. Overall, she had a good run and set a record for her home country which is nothing to take lightly. I'm really proud of her performance not only today but all season and excited to see what she can do in the outdoor season."
