Colorado State Comes Up Shot in Season Finale at Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Lo and behold overtime was needed to settle Colorado State's regular-season finale and the season's second Border War game, however it didn't go in the Rams' favor with the Cowgirls winning 69-63 Wednesday evening win at the Arena-Auditorium.

A 10-point Ram second-half lead evaporated after Wyoming rallied off 11 unanswered to take the lead with 3:15 left in the third quarter. From there, the game was a seesaw contest with the margin reaching five points just once midway through the fourth frame, which was a UW advantage. Kendyll Kinzer drained a trailing three with 2:35 to go and McKenna Hofschild went 1 of 2 from the free-throw line at 1:30, tying the game at 55-all. Neither team capitalized in the closing minute, prompting extra time. To start overtime, Tommi Olsen and McKenna Hofschild exchanged threes, but the Cowgirl then made her career-best fifth of the game. Now it wasn't over just yet as Sydney Mech had a driving layup to bring it back to a one-point game, but UW answered and sealed the game at the free-throw line after CSU suffered a turnover and a missed shot.

Wyoming improved to 15-11 overall, but 11-6 in Mountain West play to secure the No. 3 seed. The loss dropped CSU to 18-10 overall and 9-9 in conference play, which locked the Rams into the No. 6 seed.

"We're proud with how we started strong and executed early, which we even did late, but the key came down to Wyoming's runs," head coach Ryun Williams said. "At times it let them back into the game and turned momentum. Still though, we were in a position to win the game. A few free throws and drives just didn't go our way. That's all you can ask for is to be in it and we were. Now, we just need to move on and start the Mountain West Tournament, which is a new season. Let's go to Vegas."

Making history for herself on the evening was Karly Murphy who eclipsed the 1,000 career-point mark in her collegiate career. Prior to coming to CSU for graduate school, the forward scored 534 points with Wisconsin Green-Bay and now is at 476 in the Green and Gold jersey. She needed eight points to start the night and finished with 18 to go along with seven rebounds.

Leading CSU offensively was McKenna Hofshild with a game-high 22 points and five assists – now just one away from tying CSU's all-time single season assist mark of 186 by Ellen Nystrom. Notable other numbers from the Rams included Mech with nine points and six rebounds, while Kinzer had a team-high eight boards and three blocks.

For the game, CSU outshot 44.6% to 37.1%, but it was the shots from distance that mattered with the Cowgirls making 12 compared to the Rams' five.

The Rams will now travel to Las Vegas for the Mountain West Women's Basketball Tournament and will draw No. 11 San Jose State, which is scheduled for Sunday, March 6th at 8 p.m. MT.
