CSU plays nightcap of opening day
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Tournament time. It's all about the excitement of it all, as Ryun Williams reminded his team at lunch. But it only lasts as long as a team remains in the bracket.
Â
The upsets drive the fans, but they end teams' seasons. Avoid that type.
Â
Create the action, take the initiative, make key plays. That's the target.
Â
The Rams will call upon tempered enthusiasm when they tip off at 8 p.m. (MT) Sunday against San Jose State in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament.
Â
"It's experience. A lot of us were here last year, too, and obviously we lost our first game, but I think it's going to be better for us to play on the first day," Petra Farkas said after Colorado State's women's team had their shootaround prior to the opening game of the day. "Then we can just get over the rush, be like, we're here. We beat San Jose State twice, so it's going to be hard to beat them a third time. But I mean, everybody is super excited already. We just need to stay calm on the court and do whatever we do on the court every day."
Â
The Series: Colorado State swept both games with San Jose State – 90-64 at Moby, 84-70. In five of eight quarters, the Rams scored at least 20 points, hitting 30 in the fourth of the first matchup. San Jose State was 5-24 on the year and won just two conference games.
Â
What to Watch from the Spartans:Â Cyndi Lewis scored 24 for SJSU in the first game, and she's led her team in rebounding in both matchups, pulling down eight each time. She averages 12 points per game, but it is Ella Ogier, who scored 17 in the second meeting, who leads the team at 12.6.
Â
What to Watch from the Rams: A guard has scored 32 points in a game against the Spartans each time. First it was Upe Atosu, next it was McKenna Hofschild. Hofschild also combined for 17 assists in the two meetings.
Â
Of Note: Each team gets 50 minutes for a shootaround each day at Cox Pavilion. The clock starts when the first player touches a ball, and a league official had to stop the first Ram so the clock didn't start early. … Afterward, the team went and watched the first quarter of the tournament opener between Fresno State and Utah State.  … San Diego State-Boise State followed before the Rams took the floor at the Thomas & Mack Center.
