In a day that was dominated by strong and gusty winds, sophomore Rasmus Hjelm is tied for the lead as CSU is in the top half of a nationally-renowned field

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – On a day that had multiple challenging changes of weather, Colorado State maintained solid composure and is seventh after the first round of the 75th annual Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf and Titleist Monday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by San Jose State University, is being played at the renowned Pasatiempo Golf Club (Par 70 – 6,615 yards) in Santa Cruz, Calif.

The day started with a steady rain that went away and left a northern wind that was gusting as high as 30 miles per hour and high temps in the low 50s, creating an even greater difficulty for the already tough course. In the end, CSU endured the wind and, in the unique play-six, count-five format, posted a 30-over 380 to sit in seventh. No. 8 Pepperdine is the opening round leader at 18-over with their players still to play the 18th hole as play was suspended due to darkness. The Waves are three shots ahead of No. 9 Texas at 21-over 371. No. 6 Washington is third at 23-over 373, with California at 24-over 374 and San Jose State at 26-over 376 completing the top five teams. Colorado State is currently ahead of three teams in the top 50 nationally – No. 38 Oregon, No. 30 Arizona and No. 12 Stanford.

The Rams are led by sophomore Rasmus Hjelm, who is tied for the individual lead at even-par 70, as the Swede had four birdies and four bogeys on the day. Hjelm is tied with No. 13 Pierceson Coody of Texas, Nick Watts of San Jose State and Pepperdine's Dylan Menante for the lead. Junior Connor Jones is next at 6-over 76 in a tie for 29th, with freshman Christoph Bleier and redshirt-freshman Gavin Hagstrom tied for 40th at 7-over 77. Senior Davis Bryant is next at 10-over 80 in a tie for 68th, while senior Oscar Teiffel is 90th at 17-over 87.

CSU will go off No. 1 starting at 10:06 am MT in the second round, playing again with BYU.
