Colorado State Notches 21 all-time top 20 marks including a school record in California
AZUSA, Calif. / WALNUT, Calif. – Between the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays, the distance group of the Colorado State track and field program racked up 21 all-time top-20 marks in school history in the past two days.
Â
The two meets brought countless teams all around the country for the premier distance races in the season. For instance, there were 20 heats of just the 5,000-meter race on Thursday at Bryan Clay, which was on the campus of Azusa Pacific University. The Rams competed in just the 3,000m steeplechase and 10,000 at Mt. SAC, located about 10 miles away.
Â
Day one of competition on Thursday yielded 14 of the top-20 marks, while Friday evening added another seven including the highlight – Lauren Offerman's school record in the 1500. Offerman, who already obtained the 5000 record earlier this season, crossed the 1500 at Bryan Clay Invite with a time of 4:21.76 to edge the previous record by fractions of a second – .04 to be exact. Offerman unseated Wendy Knudson whose record stood since 1976.
Â
Two others were on the verge of putting their name at No. 1 too, but will settle for runner-up in CSU history. In the 5000 invite section on Thursday, Annabel Stafford, who already owns the 10,000 record earlier this year, finished with a time of 16:04.97 to position herself behind Offerman on the all-time list. In the same race was Ashlyn Hillyard, clocking a 16:06.03 for No. 3 on the school list and even Lily Tomasula-Martin garnered the seventh spot at 16:15.98. Over at Mt. SAC, Sarah Carter raced a speedy 33:44.58 in the 10,000 to position herself behind Stafford's school record. In all the women had seven top-10 marks in the two days.
Â
On the men's side, seven top-10 marks were made highlighted by the action in the 1500 and steeplechase. Jacob Brueckman crossed at 3:39.27 to move up to third all-time in the 1500, while Dawson Besst and Thomas Chaston finished their steeplechase with the third and fourth-best marks in school history, respectively.
