Jackson Morris Becomes Colorado State’s First Javelin Thrower to Advance to NCAA Championships

Jackson Morris punches ticket to NCAAs in javelin plus two other Rams grab qualifying marks in NCAA West Day One
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Fresh off his Mountain West Javelin Championship, Colorado State's Jackson Morris hit a qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships during day one of the 2022 West Regionals, becoming the program's first-ever participant to reach the national meet.
On his first attempt Wednesday at John McDonell Field, Morris threw a 68.14m/223'7'', which wound up being his best and qualifying mark. Being in the third of three flights, the attempt put him at fifth in the field. His second throw didn't move him up, but others did, sliding Morris down to ninth where he finished as there was no other movement after the final attempts. Two weeks ago, Morris won the MW with a mark of 68.74m (225-6).
Jacob Brueckman in the 1500-meter race and Tom Willems in the 400 notched qualifying finishes in their respective first round races to move on to Friday's quarterfinals. Brueckman's next race will be at 4:15 p.m. MT, while Willems will go at 5:50 p.m., but will also be in the 4x400-meter relay at 7:45 p.m.
Brueckman recorded the third-best time in the entire 1500 field at 3:40.79, placing third in the event's fastest heat as all top seven qualifiers came from it. Midway through the race, Brueckman was seventh out of 11 runners in the heat, but picked up two spots with a lap to go and then another two in the final 100. Last year, Brueckman missed out on qualifying for the quarterfinals by two spots.
An automatic advancement in the 400 meant finishing third or better in your heat, which Willems accomplished. However, he did more than that as he clocked a 45.97 to improve his PR that ranks second in CSU history. In the field, Willems' time was 12th – a 28-spot improvement from his 40th place finish last year.
Andrew Doctor finished .04 off his personal record and four sports away from advancing in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Mariano Kis measured a PR on his first shot put attempt at 17.97m (58-11½), moving him up 11th in CSU history, but falling short of advancing to nationals in 26th place. In the 800, Ryan Birkmeier nosed out a runner at the finish, but came up two places short of advancing in 26th place.
