Third-Year Coach Comes to Colorado State
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A new face will be seated alongside of head coach Ryun Williams and coaching staff on the bench next season as the program announced the hire of new assistant coach Rachel Erickson Thursday morning.
Â
"The Rams are very excited to be adding such a talented and highly skilled coach like Rachel," Williams said. "She has experience in many areas of the game that will positively impact our program. She is a highly motivated coach with a great passion for the game. Rachel is very prepared for this opportunity, and we are glad that she is a Colorado State Ram."
Â
Erickson has spent the last two seasons on staff at University of Sioux Falls after starting her coaching career at her alma mater Black Hills State University in 2019. In her time at USF, the Cougars compiled a 24-18 overall record with a 19-14 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and earned two trips to the NSIC Stanford-Health Postseason Tournament. This past season, the Cougars finished third in the South Division led by freshman guard Megan Fannin who was awarded All-NSIC Second Team honors. During the shortened COVID season that saw USF play just 14 games, Anna Brecht was named All-NSIC First Team en route to the program's sixth-straight conference tourney appearance. Seven academic all-conference awards were divvied out to Cougars in Erickson's two seasons. Coincidently, fellow CSU assistant coach Kyley Bachand was on the USF staff prior to Erickson and was named one of the Women's Basketball Coaches' Associations' Thirty Under 30, an honor created to recognize 30 up-and-coming women's basketball coaches age 30 and under at all levels of the game.
Â
Prior to her time in Sioux Falls, Erickson traded her jersey for a clip board at BHSU as a graduate assistant after her playing career. The Yellow Jackets finished with a 17-11 record in 2019-20 with a 14-8 mark in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. At both stops, Erickson was an integral part in recruiting, travel, scouting and academic progress within her teams.
Â
During her four-year career with the Yellow Jackets, the two-time all-conference player helped BHSU go 69-45 with two 20-win seasons and appear in two national tournaments. As a senior in 2017-18, the Yellow Jackets went 24-8 (16-6, RMAC) and Erickson was awarded all-conference first-team honors, averaging 12.1 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. The same year, Erickson was named the Black Hills State University Women's Athlete of the Year. At BHSU, Erickson accumulated 922 career points, 100 three pointers, and 171 assists in 108 games with 53 starts. She's 10th on the school's career free-throw percentage list with a clip of 70.5%. In the classroom, she was a two-time RMAC All-Academic recipient, a dean's list honoree and was garnered the Warrior of the Month Award given by BHSU Athletic Department, which is presented to student athletes whom exude the Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage on campus and who will be future leaders in the community.
Â
The hardwood wasn't the only playing surface that Erickson graced in the green and yellow. Erickson was an All-RMAC soccer player in that fall of 2018 to close out her athletic career.
Â
A standout prep athlete before playing at BHSU, Erickson, a native of Cheyenne, Wyo., was a two-time all-state selection and led her high school basketball team to the state championship in both her junior and senior seasons. She was also named Gatorade Player of the Year for soccer in her junior and senior seasons at Cheyenne East High School. In soccer, she was second team all-state as a freshman and first team all-state three times.
Â
Erickson graduated from BHSU with a Bachelor's Degree in Science Education in 2018, and added a master's degree in Strategic Leadership at BHSU in 2019.
Â
"I am extremely excited and grateful to be joining the Ram family," Erickson said. "Coach Williams has built a phenomenal program and I am honored to get to work with him and the rest of the staff. I cannot wait for the grind, and ready to chase that Mountain West Championship!"
