The rising freshman qualified #8 out of stroke play and won his five matches, including the last four by 2 & 1 scores

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Incoming freshman Matthew Wilkinson captured the Colorado Golf Association State Junior Championship on Thursday at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Colo. He is the seventh eventual Ram to win the crown, joining Davis Bryant (2017), Jimmy Makloski (2012), Kory Harrell (2008), John Hayes (2000), Brett Tobyne (1999) and Jeff Fujimoto (1992)

Wilkinson came out of Sunday and Monday's 36 holes of stroke play as the No. 8 seed into the match play portion of the event, as the field was cut from 156 to 32. In Tuesday's Round of 32 match, he picked up a 3 & 2 win over Trey Kirschner. Playing two rounds on Wednesday, he defeated No. 9 seed Wesley Erling 2 & 1 in the morning and followed it up with another 2 & 1 win over No. 16 Talan Gover in the quarterfinals. The same score resonated throughout the final day of competition on Thursday, as he defeated No. 13 seed Dylan Everett in the semifinals to face William Kates in the title match. Kates took an early lead with a birdie on the second hole, but Wilkinson got even with a birdie on the fourth and took a 1 up lead on the eighth that he never relinquished. He built the margin to as many as 3 up and sealed the win with a matching par on the 17th.

Wilkinson has had a solid summer already, as he advanced to final 16 of the CGA Match Play Championship last week, a tournament won by current Ram Connor Jones.
