Jacob Brueckman and Jackson Morris Earn Second Team All-America Honors with Finishes
EUGENE, Ore. – Two new names, Jacob Brueckman and Jackson Morris, will be entered in the All-American section of the Colorado State track and field record books after day one of the 2022 NCAA Track and Field Championships.
Â
In his final collegiate race, Brueckman finished ninth in one of two 1500-meter heats and ultimately placed 15th in the event. Morris, a senior in school but sophomore in track, placed 14th in the javelin. The top eight in all events garner NCAA First Team All-America honors, while positions nine thru 16 earn the second-team nods. For Brueckman, it ends a career poetically since he started as a walk-on and concluded it by capturing the Mountain West 1,500 title and running in nationals at Hayward Field. Morris on the other hand still has not only more years of eligibility left but is also not done with the current season since he is competing in the discus on Friday.
Â
Using the inside position of his heat, Brueckman jumped out to an early lead and was in second place after the first 300 meters. He hung strong in the next lap only dropping one placement, but soon after that the race got congested. With one lap to go at the 1100 mark, Brueckman was 10th and made up one position by the time he crossed at 3:40.82. The top five from each heat advanced to Friday's final plus the following top two times. The final qualifier finished at 3:39.64, which was just 1.18 ahead of Brueckman.
Â
About an hour after the 1500, the jav started and the Ram was first up. Morris' first throw was 216'9'' which had him fifth after the first round of throws and then on his second attempt he hit a 223'2'' to jump to fifth place. His third and final throw did not improve his position, nor did it drop him down by the conclusion of flight one. However, flight two did not carry the same favors as Morris slid out of the top nine – the qualification line for finals. At the conclusion of flight two and the event, Morris finished 14th. The 223'2'' mark was 2'4'' away from his school record that won the Mountain West title last month and gained him access to NCAAs.
Historically, Morris is the first Ram to ever reach NCAAs in the javelin, while Breuckman is the fifth Ram to run the 1500 at nationals.
Â
No Rams are in action on Thursday for the women's first day. Friday marks day two on the men's side with Morris in the discus field at 6:35 p.m. MT. However, Lexie Keller and the women's heptathlon commences Friday as well with four of the seven events before finishing on Saturday. The multi's first event, the 100-meter hurdles, will start at 2 p.m. MT.
