The Rams extended their lead to five through two rounds, while Davis Bryant holds a two-shot lead.
USAFA, Colo. – Colorado State graduate Davis Bryant and senior Connor Jones continue to be in the top two slots individually, leading the Rams to a five-shot lead through 36 holes of the 53rd-annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, Sept. 10. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy, is being played at the Eisenhower Blue Course (Par 72 – 7,541 yards) in USAFA, Colo.
Â
Cool and soggy conditions led to lower scores on the day for many in the field, though the afternoon wave that included CSU battled more wind. However, the Rams managed to improve three shots over the opening round with an 8-under 280 and are at 13-under 563, five shots ahead of Mountain West rival San Jose State in second at 8-under 568 after a second-round best 12-under 276. In-state rival Colorado is the only other team under par, sitting in third at 1-under 575. Mountain West foe Utah State is fourth at 1-over 577, while Utah Tech rounds out the top five teams of the 24-squad field at 3-over 579.
Â
With CSU starting on the back nine, Bryant made the turn at 1-under, while Jones joined him in the lead following a 2-under start, as the pair were at 6-under par along with three other golfers. From there, the fifth-year Bryant went 3-under on the final nine holes to finish the day with a 4-under 68 and lead at 9-under 135, two shots ahead of Jones, who posted a 3-under 69, and Utah Tech's Zach Felts. The individual field is tightly bunched at the top as 20 players are under par through 36 holes.
Â
Sophomore Christoph Bleier recorded his second consecutive even-par 72 and is tied for 21st at even-par 144. Freshman Matthew Wilkinson rebounded with a five-shot improvement in his second collegiate round with a 1-under 71 and is tied for 37th at 3-over 147. Sophomore Rasmus Hjelm also improved in his second 18 with a 2-over 74 and is tied for 59th at 6-over 150.
Â
In the individual-only event on the Silver course, sophomores Gavin Hagstrom and Jay Pabin are tied for fourth at 3-under 141, each having shot 70 in the first round and 71 in the second. The pair are three shots behind co-leaders Davis Heslington of Utah Tech and Wyoming's Patrick Azevedo. Redshirt-freshman Jordan Jennings is tied for 35th at 10-over 154.
Â
Re-pairing for the final round, CSU will tee off starting at 9:10 am off No. 1, playing with Utah Tech, San Jose State and Colorado in the final wave.
