VERONA, Wis. – Colorado State improved in its second round but slipped one spot and is in sixth through two days of the Badger Invitational, Sept. 19. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, is being played at University Ridge Golf Course (Par 72 – 6,248 yards) in Verona, Wis.
Â
Playing off No. 1 in an earlier wave, Colorado State had a very up-and-down day, but made the turn at 2-under among the counters. However, the momentum slipped in the closing stretch as CSU finished the day at 1-over 289 and a 36-hole total of 8-over 584. Notre Dame continues to lead at 5-under 571, holding a four-shot lead over Nebraska in second at 1-under 575. Old Dominion is third at 5-over 581, with North Florida and Washington State tied for fourth at 7-over 583.
Â
"We really had it going as a team today and dropped a few shots coming in," head coach Laura Cilek said. "We are at the top of the leaderboard competing which is where we want to be. I am looking forward to seeing if we can climb a few more spots tomorrow."
Â
Individually, the Rams are paced by junior Panchalika Arphamongkol (aka "Friendly"), who is tied for eight at 1-under 143 after tying her career low with a 2-under 70 in today's action. Junior Sofia Torres posted the low score of the day for CSU and a personal career-best round, a 3-under 69, to move into a tie for 12th. Senior Andrea Bergsdottir is next in a tie for 23rd at 3-over 47, with senior Gabby Minier in a tie for 49th at 9-over 153 after a five-shot improvement from her first to second round. Sophomore Lacey Uchida rounds out the CSU scoring in a tie for 55th at 10-over 154. Montgomery Ferreira of Notre Dame is the leader at 6-under 138, two shots ahead of a trio of golfers behind her as just 11 players are under par through 36 holes.
Â
"Friendly and Sofia had great rounds today," Cilek continued. "To get under par and keep making birdies takes a lot of confidence. It has been awesome to see them come out with a strong start this year."
Â
In Tuesday's shotgun start at 8 a.m. MT, the Rams are playing with North Florida and Washington State and starting on holes 4-7.
