Matheson leads 1-2-3 finish in 100-yard butterfly

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Taking a chance to explore options during the weekend, some things still held rather true for Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team over the weekend at the Air Force Winter Invitational came to a close on Saturday.

Butterfly has been one of the best events for the Rams this season, a trend which continued on Saturday as Lucy Matheson led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100-yard event, touching in at 56.37. She was followed by teammates Amanda Hoffman (57.84) and Hannah Sykes, 58.14, which Katie McClelland providing the Rams half of the top eight with a seventh-place showing; Leigha O'Connor and Erin Dawson added additional scoring, finishing 13th and 14th.

"Our butterfliers have proved invaluable at the top end and with depth all year long," CSU head coach Christopher Woodard said.

Colorado State took second on a final day with just nine events as the Rams scored 420.5 points, finishing behind host Air Force which tallied 468.5.

The day was more about looking for answers than victories for CSU head coach Christopher Woodard, and in that regard, the second day was a success. The team had 22 individual scoring performances in the lanes, two more in the one diving event, and 14 of those swims were top-eight finishes. Jessica Albanna and Braeden Shaffer both competed on the platform for the first time this season, with Albanna posting a personal-best 197.60.

McClelland, with a runner-up showing in the 100 breaststroke, had a pair of top-eight individual finishes, as did Matheson. Erin Dawson and Caroline Perry each placed in two races as the majority of the lineup had a much lighter competition schedule on the second day.

"We have some options with our relays, which is always important," Woodard said. "I think our divers gained some confidence and invaluable experience on the platform today, and they are hitting their stride at just the right moment."

The Rams opened with a victory in the 200 medley relay with the collective of Liza Lunina, McClelland, Matheson and Lexie Trietley posting a 1:44.53. They made a clean sweep of the relay on the weekend when Megan Hager, Anika Johnson, Trietley and Azalea Shepherd closed out the weekend with a 3:30.16 to win the 400 free relay at the end.

The team has one more dual on the schedule -- Friday at Northern Colorado, beginning at 5 p.m.
