Rams head to AFA Invite to compete on all three boards

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Looking to build up the confidence one more time before the Mountain West Championships, Colorado State's women's divers will compete this weekend at the Air Force Invitational.

The meet runs Thursday through Saturday, with one board competed each session. The women will go in order, with the 1-meter springboard on Thursday, the 3-meter on Friday and the platform on Saturday. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. each day, with finals immediately following. There will be live scoring for the meet.

For CSU diving coach Chris Bergere, everything about the weekend is designed perfectly.

"I love that it's the same format as the Mountain West Championships with preliminaries and finals, and you're diving against some really excellent talent," he said. "I think there will be a couple of kids better than in the Mountain West, but in the Mountain West, the top end is really tough. This is a great setup for us. We're really comfortable down in Colorado Springs."

Bergere said building confidence is key, and senior Jessica Albanna has been performing a slow build  all season. She won both springboards last Friday at Northern Colorado, both with personal-best scores of 276.08 (1-meter) and 289.28 (3-meter), both scores which rank her eight all-time for the Rams. Already qualified for the NCAA Zones for the first time, her  197.60 a few weeks ago on the platform at the Air Force Winter Invite also moved her from ninth to seventh in program history.

He's also seen improvement from Braeden Shaffer (who has hit a PR on the 3-meter this season) and Maggie Di Scipio, and he feels these three days offer the trio a prime opportunity to continue building. Exposure to the platform is especially important since the Rams have been limited to it this season.

"Jessica is just really comfortable with her list her senior year," he said. "The difficult dives she does, she's comfortable with them now, and it takes three or four years to perform them better. This year, she doesn't have any holes in her list."
