The 17-year head coach signs contract to continue his tenure at Colorado State
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State Head Track and Field Coach Brian Bedard has signed a contract, locking him into place as the program's leader through June 30, 2027, Director of Athletics Joe Parker announced Thursday.
Bedard, who began his coaching career as an assistant with the program in 1988, took the helm as head coach in 2006. Entering his 18th season in 2022-23, Bedard has continued to build a culture of excellence around Colorado State Track and Field. Over his tenure, Bedard has led the Rams to 16 Mountain West Championships with 141 Mountain West Individual Championships and 83 All-American athletes. He is a 12-time Mountain West Coach of the Year and a six-time USTFCCCA Regional Coach of the Year award winner.
"I'm excited about this contract because it shows a long-term commitment from Joe Parker and athletics administration to support track and field at Colorado State," Bedard said. "I appreciate the support and confidence they have in me to lead the program into the future, and I am thankful to be working with an exceptional staff and committed student-athletes as we look forward to the future beginning with the indoor season 2023."
"Under Brian's leadership, our track and field and cross country programs have exemplified the 'Championship Culture' we want each program in our department to aspire to achieve.," said Parker. "Brian's commitment to Colorado State Athletics and the student-athletes in his programs is as stalwart as it comes, and I am thrilled that we were able to secure him as the leader of these programs for years to come."
On top of his head coaching role, Bedard specializes in working with the Ram's throwing team and preparing them for not only the collegiate level, but the national and Olympic level as well. Names such as Mostafa Hassan, the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Indoor Shot Put Champion, Shadae Lawrence who set the Jamaican National record for discus throw in 2019 with a mark of 65.05m and finally, five-time All-American and 2005 NCAA individual hammer throw champion, Loree Smith, all sit on Bedard's resume. All of Colorado State's school records in throwing events have been set during Bedard's tenure.
A Ram through and through, Bedard was a thrower for CSU's track and field team from 1983-88 where he was a Western Athletic Conference runner-up in the discus and recorded an eighth-place finish in the shot put in conference competition. Entering the 2023 season, he still stands 18th on the outdoor discus record list at CSU with a toss of 176'10''.
Bedard and the Rams will continue their 2022-23 Indoor Track and Field season January 15 at the Potts Invitational hosted by Colorado.
