Rams bounce back with some singles victories
SALT LAKE CITY – There is nothing semi-formidable about Radka Buzkova and Victoria Erechtchenko – the pairing is proving to be a full-on menace on the courts.
The Colorado State doubles tandem became just the third team for the Rams to reach the semifinal round of the ITA Mountain Regional, and Buzkova was on the first to do so two years ago when two teams from Colorado State would eventually play for the championship with both advancing to the ITA Fall Indoor Nationals.
Buzkova and Erechtchenko started the day with a Border War matchup, beating Violetta Borodina and Sophie Zehender of Wyoming 8-5. They used the same score to beat BYU's Kendall Kovick and Kara Wheatley in the quarterfinals. On Saturday, the two will face top-seeded Jacque Dunyon and Yujia Huang, also of BYU.
Consolation rounds for singles began on the day, with the Rams picking up a pair of victories. Zara Lennon defeated Mariana Zurita Berdecio of Utah Tech in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Erechtchenko needed a third-set 10-point tiebreak to move past Cindy Hu of UNLV 6-4, 1-6, 10-6.
The tournament continues Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
