Team puts 23-dual unbeaten streak on the line
FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – The season is set to begin, but it's not an easy entry.
Â
Colorado State's swimming and diving team takes a 23-dual unbeaten streak into Friday's season-opening dual with Wyoming at Laramie High School. The meet begins at 4 p.m.
Â
Coach Christopher Woodard likes the fact the most meaningful dual of the campaign is immediately out of the chutes, noting a showdown with the Cowgirls will bring out the best in both squads.
Â
"I'm very excited that (Wyoming coach) Dave (Denniston) and Wyoming agreed to compete with us right off the bat. I think sometimes we go into the season and we may see an invitational or someone who is not a rival, so we kind of get to gently ease our way into a season," Woodard said. "This is not a gentle easing. This is competition right off the bat, which is exactly what we need."
Â
The Rams bring back a strong lineup which includes five All-Mountain West performers and a handful of competitors who rank in the top 10 in school history. Lucy Matheson, who was named conference swimmer of the week a record four times in 2022-23, headlines the list of returners after winning 16 individual races and placing in the top 10 in three events at the Mountain West Championships. Lexie Trietley was named freshman of the week six times, winning 15 individuals races and placing in the top six twice at the championships.
Â
Erin Dawson, Anika Johnson, Maya White return as all-conference selections.
Â
The squad has not lost a dual in the past two seasons, but continuing the streak is not paramount to what Woodard is looking for out of the first meet of the season.
Â
"I'm going to take that as good news that I didn't know it's at 23. Hopefully the team has the same perspective on it," Woodard said. "I know this sounds trite, but while that's a nice accolade, it really is not what we're focused on. We get a chance to look at our lineup top to bottom, see not only look at our top-line but our middle-of-the-pack kids and really see can they compete. I'm really excited to see them race."
Â
Woodard is also eager to see his five incoming freshmen and three transfers entered into the mix, a group he believes not only strengthens the lineup but provides him with lineup flexibility.
Â
The dual will feature 16 events. The two diving competitions will be held prior to the start of the swimming action.
