Matchups with Queens, Old Dominion a first for program
FORT COLLINS – The plan behind the season schedule was to explore new matchups and locales, one which goes into effect for the first time this weekend as Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team heads east for a Friday double dual.
Â
The Rams, 3-1 and coming off a win over Denver this past Friday, will travel to Charlotte, N.C., to face host Queens University and Old Dominion. The meet begins at 2 p.m. MT. Queens is 3-2 on the season with losses to No. 4 North Carolina and South Carolina. Old Dominion is 1-3 on the season. Colorado State is ranked No. 13 in Mid-Majors by SwimCloud; Queens is No. 22.
Â
In both instances, it will be the first matchup in program history.
Â
"Old Dominion is a really strong program, and we were lucky enough because I reached out to several programs and Coach Jeff (Dugdale) and Queens invited us in there," CSU coach Christopher Woodard said. "He was incredibly gracious, and it will be a challenge for us. It's a team that's moved from DII to DI and won the National Invitational Championship their very first year in DI. It's a good test for us and a new location."
Â
This will mark the first chance this season for the Rams to swim at sea level, which Woodard knows his team is excited to do. Most years, the Rams hit a midseason meet out of altitude, but this is the first of three meets the Rams will get to swim at sea level.
Â
While the team will not rest for this meet, the drop in altitude will almost feel like a tapered meet and he's hoping it will help them when it comes to drawing lane assignments at conference.
Â
"That is definitely unique. Last year we had the opportunity to go to Chick-fil-A, but that is very rare that other than midseason or January or conference we're able to swim at sea level," Woodard said. "This is a unique situation for us. I think maybe it will improve our seeding for conference, which was an issue I think in the past two years."
Â
The Rams are coming off a meet where they broke two Moby Pool records, the 200-yard medley relay and Lexie Trietley's swim in the 50 freestyle. As a team, they hold 15 times which rank in the top five in the Mountain West, with Erin Dawson's swims in both the 200 and 400 individual medleys ranking first.
