Rams Fall to Fresno State in Mountain West Tournament Final

Colorado State drops five set match to Bulldogs
LAS VEGAS – The Colorado State volleyball team fell to Fresno State Friday night in the Mountain West Tournament final. In their 13th five-set match of the season, the Rams fell in five after taking a 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs.

Colorado State was led by junior Malaya Jones who finished the night with a Mountain West Championship record of 34 kills. Jones along with teammate Emery Herman were both named to the Mountain West All-Tournament team.

The Rams took the first set 25-20 with Jones totaling eight kills in the first set alone. As a team, the Rams hit at a .361 efficiency.

Taking a 2-0 lead, Colorado State won the second set 25-23. Jones added another eight kills while teammate Kennedy Stanford added three as well.

Both the third and fourth set for the Rams needed extra points to decide a winner. The third set finished 26-24 and the fourth finished 28-26, both in favor of the Bulldogs. The Rams had championship match point in both the third and fourth set.

In the fifth, the Bulldogs were able to collect on all their built momentum, drawing a 13-10 lead before closing the match with a fifth set score of 15-12 and claim the Mountain West Tournament Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Herman finished the night with 55 assists and four service aces as she set the Colorado State single season ace record with 48 total on the season. Stanford added 12 kills while fifth-year senior Annie Sullivan added 11 kills of her own.

Defensively, libero Kate Yoshimoto totaled 21 digs on the night with Jones added a career high 18 digs. Anna Porter and Emery Herman both added 12 digs as well while Karina Leber contributed five block assists.
