Rams close out invite Saturday with platform
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – With a few tweaks, Colorado State head diving coach Chris Bergere can see a couple of his divers making the cut in a field which includes some top divers from the Power 5 ranks. It's why he finds the Air Force Diving Invitational so valuable with the Mountain West Championships fast approaching.
Â
For the second consecutive day, it was junior Braeden Shaffer who led the trio of Rams as they competed on the 1-meter springboard on Friday. She scored a 219.95, with senior teammate Jessica Albanna a shade behind at 218.80. Freshman Maggie Di Scipio scored a 207.20.
Â
The cutline for the top 12 advancing to the finals was 232.55.
Â
"We talked about it today with Braeden; you just need to finish those dives better. Same with Jess," Bergere said. "They're right there, and I think they know that. That's the message, they need to finish their dives to be a little bit better and they'll be right there for the Mountain West. We have a week to do that, and they can see it. They have the skills, they just have to put it together."
Â
What he does like is the format and the way his divers are reading it. It is generally the same set up at the conference meet, except the top eight will dive in the night session, spots 9-16 immediately after the preliminaries, the way it is being conducted this week. The top 24 will score at conference. All three placed in the top 24, with Shaffer 16th, Albanna 18th and Di Scipio 24th.
Â
Bergere believes both Albanna and Shaffer, who will compete at the Mountain West Championships, can both score at the meet, and getting comfortable with the format will only help.
Â
"They're thinking about the Mountain West and this is the same format and the competition is going to be similar," he said. "It's going to be difficult. I think they're thinking about that and they're collecting their thoughts better and see themselves doing better at the Mountain West, because they know they can."
