Team bypasses early alarm to get rest
LAS VEGAS – A tournament is a fresh start.
Colorado State's men's basketball team tips off the Mountain West Tournament on Wednesday at the Thomas & Mack Center as the No. 8 seed, facing No. 9 Fresno State at 12 p.m. (MT). The Rams, at 14-17, are looking at this as a new opportunity.
"For sure. I think everyone has to look at it that way," Patrick Cartier said. "At tourney time, you kinda throw the records at, look at where you're at with the seed and everything, see how many games you have to win and go from there."
The Rams own two wins over the Bulldogs this season, winning by 22 at Moby Arena early in the campaign and escaping with a three-point victory Feb. 18 in Fresno. Every team wants to be playing at their best at this time of the season, and Cartier feels the team is approaching the goal.
"I think Coach (Niko) Medved said it the other day: I think we're playing as well as we've played, but I don't think we're playing our best, the best we can possibly play" Cartier said. "That's the goal for this week and for the rest of the season. You want to get hot at the right time; that's what every team is trying to do and win games at the end of the year. That's what we're trying to do."
Beauty Sleep
The choice between an early alarm and a good night's rest was an easy call.
Colorado State's men's basketball team, by virtue of playing Fresno State in the early game on drew a 7 a.m. shootaround local time.
Hard pass.
"I don't think anyone would choose to do that," Medved said. "We came in yesterday, and we went to support the women's team, then we came back and did some run-through."
The Rams arrived in Las Vegas the day before, and shortly after checking into their room, were back on the bus to go watch the first half of the women's semifinal with Wyoming. They left, did a quick walk-though in a meeting room and hit the hay.
On Tap
Wednesday is a four-game slate, three on the men's side for the opening round. After the Rams play, Air Force and UNLV meet at 1:30, followed by Wyoming and New Mexico at 4.
The night closes with the women's championship game between No. 21 UNLV and Wyoming, the top two seeds, at 8 p.m.
