No teams finish below par after the first round of the NCAA Championship
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Competing in their first round at the NCAA Championship since 2011, Colorado State found themselves battling nerves and a tough course on Friday. The Rams shot a 16-over, 296 during the opening round to sit in 28th place. The 7,289-yard par 70 Grayhawk Golf Club proved to be a challenge on Friday as no team finished below par. Only Georgia Tech sits at even through 18 holes.
The lengthy course provided challenges all day as Connor Jones turned in the best scorecard for the Rams. The Westminister native shot a 1-over, 71. CSU teed off on the back nine and Jones was ready to go with a birdie on the opening hole. He ended up making the turn at 1-over after a double bogey on 14. Following a bogey to open his final nine, he went on to record three straight birdies to reach 1-under.
Jones recorded his second double bogey of the day on the 384 par 4 sixth hole to close his day at 1-over. He sits in a tie for 31st.
Missed opportunities and big numbers hurt the Rams on Friday as they recorded nine scores of double bogey or worse.
CSU did steady the ship on their second nine shooting a counting score of 6-over after making the turn at 10-over-par.
Jones was not the only Ram to place some red on his scorecard during the second nine as Christoph Bleier also recorded three birdies over it.
Colorado State, like the rest of the field, looks to regroup and attack the course on Saturday when they start teeing off at 1:25 pm MT. CSU will once again be playing alongside Georgia and Ohio State. Live results of the round can be found on GolfStat.
