McDonald earns first-team All-American honors in women’s discus
AUSTIN, Texas – The Colorado State track and field team wrapped up its 2022-23 season Saturday evening at the NCAA Championship Meet in Austin, Texas as three different Rams successfully finished two different events to tie a bow on the year.
Â
First up was the women's discus throw with both Gabi McDonald and Klaire Kovatch set to compete in the final throwing event of the weekend. McDonald, who already placed 12th in the women's shot put Thursday night, was notably the veteran of the two athletes, with Kovatch making her first NCAA Championship appearance as just a redshirt freshman.
Â
McDonald went on to earn her second All-American honor of the championship meet, but this time she earned a spot on the first-team All-American podium after recording a throw of 57.76 meters to claim seventh place in the nation. This is McDonald's third All-American honor overall in just her second appearance on the NCAA Championship stage.
Â
"Gabi competed really well in the preliminary rounds, which earned her a spot in the final, but with wind conditions changing, she just couldn't line up that big one in the final, but not for lack of effort," head coach Brian Bedard said. "I'm very proud of her and her journey to this point. She's always fighting, scratching and clawing to get better and it's awesome to see it pay off."
Â
Kovatch finished her discus season placing 21st overall with a top throw of 51.81 meters, but it was the experience alone that has Bedard looking forward to Kovatch's bright future.
Â
"This was a great opportunity for Klaire as just a redshirt freshman," Bedard said. "It really opened her eyes up to the possibilities for her and we're already planning and discussing how to get better at this meet specifically in the future."
Â
Rounding out the day, meet and season was senior Sarah Carter competing in the women's 5,000 meter run. Carter, the 2023 Mountain West Outdoor 10K champion and indoor 5K champion finished 23rd in the field with a time of 17:01.30 seconds. She will return next season for her fifth-year as a Ram to defend her conference titles.
Â
The Colorado State track and field team will now enter the off season after nearly six successful months of competition and look forward to the beginning of the 2023-24 indoor season next January.
