The award recognizes the nation's best defensive back
FORT COLLINS - Colorado State junior safety Jack Howell has landed on another preseason watch list - the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame (OSHOF) and the Jim Thorpe Association announced Thursday.
Howell was named a preseason all-conference selection by both the Mountain West and Pro Football Focus, as well as earning a preseason watch list spot on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for the top defensive player.
The Fort Collins native led nation's defensive backs in 2022 with 108 tackles and earned All-Mountain West First Team recognition for the first time. During his freshman campaign in 2021, he was named an FWAA Freshman All-American.Â
The Jim Thorpe watch list totals 35 players based on previous performance and preseason Al-American lists. Howell is one of four MW players to be named to the watch list.
The OSHOF and the Jim Thorpe Association will announce finalist for the 2023 trophy on Nov. 28 and the winner will be unveiled on ESPN's live presentation of The Home Depot College Football Awards.
