Team set for double dual with FGCU, Miami

FORT COLLINS – Time to break up the routine.

More than a month since its last competition, and more than two months out from a dual meet, Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team is set to break out of the training mode and get back into action with a double dual hosted by Florida Gulf Coast, with Miami also in attendance. The meet will be held at the FGCU Aquatics Complex, beginning at 12 p.m. MT.

The Rams last competed Dec. 2 at the Iowa Invitational, placing third after spending the three-day event seeing a host of season- and personal-best swims being recorded. The last time the team had a dual was back on Nov. 2 when the team moved to 5-1 on the season with a pair of wins against Queens and Old Dominion.

The time since has been filled with a couple of mini breaks for holidays and a ton of training. Coach Christopher Woodard is positive his team is ready to step onto the blocks again, but also adjust the scenery of the season.

The Rams left Jan. 4 to train in the Fort Meyers, Fla., area for three days leading into the meet, and will remain one day after to train.

"Seeing the sunshine, being outdoors, it sounds kinda diva-like for us to go to Florida, but it makes a difference because it takes them out of training in Moby and away from the same four walls and a chance to get outdoors," Woodard said. "I think it adds to our training dynamic. Really, the focus is the meet. We're down there to compete against a very good Florida Gulf Coast team and a Power 5 team in Miami and measure ourselves against that competition."

FGCU hasn't competed much, going 2-1 in duals (both wins are against Bellarmine), with a second-place finish at the Magnus Cup at Cleveland State. The Hurricanes are 5-1 on the season, having just beaten Iowa and Vanderbilt in a double dual coming out of the break.

Woodard was encouraged by the first half of the season, capped by the performances at the Iowa Invitational. Lexie Trietley posted a win in the 100-yard freestyle, Maya White (1,650 freestyle) and Erin Dawson (400 individual medley) notched NCAA 'B' cuts and diver Maggie Di Scipio hit the NCAA Zones mark on the 3-meter. The event was filled with season-bests and even some personal marks.

Now the team is ready to begin a rush to the end, with just three more competitions in the lanes before the Mountain West Championships at the University of Houston from Feb. 21-24. This first competition helps set the tempo for the final push.

"Once we get into meets, I think they have that repetition of being able to race from week-to-week, but not having a dual meet in two months and only having our last competition a month prior, what I'm looking for is shaking the rust off," he said. "Let's make sure we're not making mistakes. We really focused this week on the little things, because what we don't want to see once we get there is mental lapses because they're out of the racing mentality.

"When we went home, we weren't on a schedule. Now that we're back, we have to get used to organizing our days so we're at peak performance. I don't want to say the hard work, but more the endurance work … Now it becomes a lot of polishing. We have to hit rates, we have to  hit splits. There's no real soft practices here. Occasionally a recovery practice to get ready for the next one, but not many."
