Erechtchenko/Weekley stretch out debut tourney
LAS VEGAS – An impressive run came to a close Saturday morning, but the overall journey produced plenty of promise for what looms in the future.
Â
Victoria Erechtchenko and Sarah Weekley reached the doubles final of the Mountain West Fall Individuals, where the Colorado State women's tennis duo dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to the team of Zdena Safarova and Maya Dutta of Boise State at the Darling Tennis Center.
Â
The Boise State tandem earned a bid to the ITA Conference Masters in November.
Â
The Rams tandem was put together for the first time this week, taking out a pair of higher seeded teams on their way to reaching the finals, including a win over the top-ranked team in the draw in Friday's semifinals. What it means for the future is unknown with the rest of the fall campaign still giving coach Mai-Ly Tran to tinker, but their play provides things to consider.
Â
"It was a great run by this new doubles team," Tran said. "This showed the level and ability we have to compete with the top teams in the country."
Â
The team will have 12 days to practice before their next competition, which take them to Las Cruces, N.M., for the ITA Regionals, opening Oct. 17.

Finals: Zdena Safarova/Maya Dutta, BSU, d. Victoria Erechtchenko/Sarah Weekley, CSU, 7-5, 6-4
