Rams knocked off by high-scoring Lumberjacks

FORT COLLINS. – Colorado State women's basketball battled back to take the lead late in the game but were unable to close it out as the Rams fell to Northern Arizona 84-80 for its first home loss of the season.

Trailing by eight with 7:32 remaining in the game, Colorado State put the clamps on defensively and used its success to create offense on the other end, sparking a 10-2 run to reclaim the lead over the Lumberjacks with 2:30 remaining.

NAU found the response it needed on the ensuing possession from the game's leading scorer, Taylor Feldman, at the guard drilled a three from the top of the arc to flip the script again. Despite getting some of the stops they needed, the Rams were unable to make another bucket down the stretch and allowed the Lumberjacks to escape with a victory.

Emma Ronsiek led the Rams in scoring with 22 points, while Sanna Ström flirted with a triple-double in a 13-point, eight-rebound and seven-assist performance.

How It Happened
With Northern Arizona averaging 82.4 points per game entering the night, the Rams knew they were in for a high-scoring affair. That materialized quickly in the first quarter as it was the 3-ball that played the difference maker in Northern Arizona building an early lead. The Lumberjacks knocked down five triples in the opening 10 minutes and used seven second-chance points to build a 25-18 lead entering the second quarter.

The Colorado State defense established some control in the early parts of the second, holding the Lumberjacks scoreless for over four minutes to spur a 7-0 run for the home team. Emma Ronsiek nailed a triple from the right wing to draw the Rams within one, 31-30, but five-straight points from NAU in response kept the Green and Gold at an arms length. Staring down a nine-point deficit heading into halftime, Kloe Froebe knocked down a corner three before Marta Leimane got the block on the defensive end, cutting it to a two-possession game, 43-37, at the break.

The third quarter was one of many swings, beginning with a quality run from the Rams. CSU went down low early to Emma Ronsiek, who found her way to four quick points in the opening minutes. Colorado State erupted to score 10 of the first 14 points of the quarter, including an Emma Ronsiek three on an assist from her sister Hannah which gave CSU a 49-47 lead. The lead was short lived, however, as the explosive NAU offense rattled off a 9-0 run in response.

The Rams swung the momentum in their favor once again before the end of the quarter as Hannah Simental and Emma Ronsiek hit back-to-back threes, followed by a Simental steal that led to a Ström layup on the other end, taking the lead back 59-58. However, Northern Arizona's Sophie Glancey scored seven of the final 12 points of the quarter as the Lumberjacks clawed their way back in front once again.

The Rams were kept at bay for the majority of the final quarter as a nearly three-minute scoring drought prevented them from cutting into the deficit. Hannah Ronsiek broke the spell with a three and after a NAU layup the Rams broke open a 7-0 run, capped by an and-one layup from Emma Ronsiek that gave CSU the lead. The scoring was all but stopped there for the Rams as they made just one free throw in the final 2:30 of game time, allowing Northern Arizona to capitalize and take the win.
