Late drought hurts Colorado State against VCU
HENDERSON, Nev. – Closing time escaped Colorado State men's basketball Saturday night as they fell 76-68 to VCU in the clash of the Rams.
Â
Up 61-60 with 6:53 left in the game CSU went on a three-and-a-half minute scoring drought allowing VCU to go on a 7-0 run and take the lead for good. Colorado State continued to get stops during the drought, but the backbreaker came when VCU got four straight offensive rebounds leading to a Joel Bamisile 3-pointer and putting VCU up by five.
Â
VCU made a pair of timely 3s to put the game away.
Â
Colorado State led most of the first half thanks to strong performances off the bench from Keshawn Williams, Bowen Born and Rashaan Mbebma. The trio combined for 18 of the team's 32 points as CSU trailed 33-32 at the break.
Â
Williams finished the game with a team-high 14 points, while Mbemba had 10 points and a career-high seven assists.
Â
CSU saw its deficit grow early in the second half but used a 10-0 run to get back in the game and take the lead on the Nique Clifford 3.
Â
Neither team led by more than one possession until the late drought by CSU.
Â
