Guard becomes first player to win MW player and freshman of the week awards in the same week.
FORT COLLINS – In the words of Colorado State women's basketball head coach Ryun Williams, Sunday's 74-72 overtime win against Gonzaga was a "coming out party" for freshman guard Brooke Carlson. The party continues Monday afternoon as the Ram was named the Mountain West Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week for her performance in the CSU win.
Â
By claiming each of the weekly awards, Carlson becomes the first player in Mountain West history to be named both the player of the week and freshman of the week since the league began recognizing both during the 2021-22 season. Carlson is also the first freshman to earn the league's player of the week honor since 2020-21.
Â
The freshman guard came off the bench and poured in a career-high 18 points to go with five assists and two steals, all while playing a career-high 27 minutes. Carlson also delivered one of the best moments of the young season for Colorado State as she drove to the basket to make a tough layup in traffic with two seconds remaining, putting the Rams on top and ultimately sealing the victory.
Â
The Batavia, Ill., native also played a big role in getting her team to overtime as Colorado State faced a 20-point deficit at the halftime break. Carlson came alive with seven points and two steals in the third quarter, helping CSU outscore the Bulldogs 24-9 in the period. Carlson went on to dish out three assists in the fourth quarter and finished the second half with 13 points to lead the come-from-behind effort.
Â
Carlson is the second Ram to earn each of the league's weekly awards this season, joining fellow Illinoisian freshman Kloe Froebe in earning the MW Freshman of the Week award and Emma Ronsiek in claiming the conference's player of the week honor.
Â
Carlson and the Rams will be back in action next Monday (Dec. 16) for the last home game of 2024 when they take on UTEP at 6:30 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets to all CSU women's basketball games by visiting CSURams.com/WBBTickets.
