BOSTON – Colorado State junior Mya Lesnar secured the first women's indoor national championship in Colorado State Track and Field history after recording a mark of 18.53 meters Saturday afternoon at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Â
Lesnar's championship throw came on her fourth attempt after throwing marks of 15.36 meters and 16.97 meters earlier in the competition to earn her the seventh qualifying spot in the final round of throws. The 18.53 mark also stands as a facilities record in the women's shot out at The Track at New Balance in Boston.Â
Â
Entering the competition with the nation's top mark, Lesnar was the favorite to win and was able to record another big mark to solidify her mark in the national and Colorado State record book. Lesnar will also walk away as a First-Team All American.
"We got off to a slow start. Mya was just pressing a bit, not quite hitting her technical cues. She settled down in the final throws and began to compete like Mya," said head coach Brian Bedard. "We got the result we wanted and I think Mya gained some good experience as she worked through the competition."
Â
Teammate Gabi Morris placed 13th in the same event after recording a mark of 16.25. It marks Morris' second appearance in the indoor shot put at the national level as the junior improved on her mark from last season after she recorded a mark of 16.20 meters good for 12th place in 2023.
Â
Morris threw her best mark of the competition on her first throw of the competition. Finishing in the top 16 national earned Morris her second Second-Team All-American honor in the indoor women's shot put after earning her first last season.
Â
Lesnar becomes Colorado State's first indoor national champion since 2018 when Mostafa Hassan defended his 2017 national championship crown, also in the shot put. Lesnar also becomes just the second-ever women's national champion from Colorado State, joining Loree Smith who won the women's hammer throw at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor National Championship.
Â
Head coach and throws coach Brian Bedard totals his third NCAA individual champion in his 18-year head coaching career and the 94th and 95th All-American honors of his career as well.
Â
The Colorado State track and field team will not skip a beat before the outdoor season begins right away next weekend as the Rams will travel to the Jerry Quiller Invitational hosted by Colorado March 15 and 16.
