Colorado State Women Win 2024 Outdoor Title

Women’s claims fifth consecutive Mountain West Championship and second straight outdoor title
FRESNO, Calif. -Â The Colorado State women's track and field left Veteran's Memorial Stadium on top of the world and on top of the conference Saturday night, sealing its second straight Mountain West Outdoor Championship and fifth straight championship across both indoor and outdoor seasons.

The Rams finished first with a score of 165 points, 13 points above second place San Diego State. The Colorado State men's team- finished second in the team standings with 157.50, falling to Air Force who finished with 226.50 points.

Michaela Hawkins started the day with a bang, winning the women's discus championship with a throw of 60.57 meters. The Rams added 25 points in total to the women's team total with Gabi Morris claiming bronze, Klaire Kovatch placing fourth and Kajsa Borrman finishing fifth.

The championship was sealed for the Rams when Sarah Carter at the Colorado State distance crew scored 20 points collectively in the women's 5K run with Carter winning her second individual championship of the meet with a time of 16:00.80. With the event being the second to last event of the meet, and the Aztecs only trailing by two points, Carter and her crew knew they had some work to do.

Earlier in the meet, Quinn McConnell and Ryan Birkmeier won their respective 800 meter dashes. McConnell won the women's 800 with a time of 2:04.51, good for a PR and second best time in CSU history. Birkmeier won the men's 800 with a time of 1:49.39, reclaiming his crown after winning the event in 2022.

With the Rams boasting nine total event championships, seven for the women and two for the men, it was an all out team effort from Colorado State that sealed the championship on the women's side, especially with two championships each were contributed by Mya Lesnar and Sarah Carter who were named the Women's Field and Women's Track Performers of the Meet respectively.

Other podium finishers on championship Saturday include Tatum Bailey finished second in the women's high jump clearing 1.73 meters.

The Colorado State men's 4x100 meter team also finished third with a time of 40.97 seconds. The Rams' relay was made up of Carsen Bruns, Cole Nordman, Tyler Colwell and Kenny Carpenter.

Capenter went on to claim another third place medal in the men's open 400 meter dash with a time of 46.91 seconds.

Will Chiang tied for third in the men's pole vault, clearing 4.87 meters.

Overall, the title means the Colorado State women's track and field team remains unbeaten through the past five Mountain West Championships across indoor and outdoor, and both teams will now set their eyes forward to the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Rounds in Fayetteville, Arkansas May 22-25 where the top 48 athletes in each event will qualify and then the top 12 marks from Fayetteville will move on to compete at the NCAA Championship Meet in Euguene, Oregon June 5-8.
