CSU men’s golf teed off the NCAA Regionals Monday
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The first round of the NCAA West Lafayette Regional was like a double breaking-up-and-downhill putt for Colorado State men's golf on Monday. The Rams started slow but steadied the ship on their second nine to end up tied for sixth with a 9-over, 297.
Â
Teeing off the back nine at Brick Boilermaker Golf Course, CSU's third straight appearance in the NCAA Regionals was out to a tough start as the team made the turn at 8-over and near the bottom of the leaderboard. Graduate student Connor Jones was the only Ram to shoot even or better in the opening nine with a 36. He was 2-over through four before birdies on the 14th and 16th hole drew him back to even.
Â
While the first nine had its bumps and bruises the second nine was smooth sailing. Three Rams shot even par during over it in Christoph Bleier, Jay Pabin and Rasmus Hjelm. Pabin recorded an eagle and birdie over it while Bleier and Hjelm each birdied the par 4 first. The Rams were just 1-over as a team on the front nine.
Â
Overall, Jones turned in the best round of the day with a 1-over 73 to be tied for 23rd. Bleier and Pabin are a stroke back with opening round 74s, tied for 28th.
Â
Colorado State is tied with Mississippi State for sixth place and seven strokes behind conference foe New Mexico for the all-important fifth spot.
Â
CSU will tee off with Indiana and San Diego State for Tuesday's second round starting at 6:25 a.m. MT. Live results can be found on GolfStat.
