EUGENE, Ore. – The Colorado State track and field team finished its season strong Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Championship meet, closing out the weekend with two Rams earning All-American honors in the women's discus throw Saturday afternoon.
Michaela Hawkins closed out her CSU career with a sixth-place finish in the women's discus with a mark of 59.82 meters. The marked named Hawkins a First-Team All-American for the first time in her college career.
Hawkins will finish her career as a Ram ranked second in the Colorado State record book in the women's discus throw with a career best toss of 61.24 meters, only following Mountain West record holder and Olympian Shadae Lawrence.
The thrower will have her own shot at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials in the women's discus, as Hawkins will travel back to Euguene, Ore., in two weeks after her season-best mark from April earned her a spot in the field. The top three athletes from each event will qualify for the Olympic roster.
Teammate Gabi Morris also competed in the women's discus throw, marking her second event of the NCAA Championship meet after she claimed silver and a First-Team All-American honor in the women's shot put Thursday. Morris finished 16th overall in the discus competition with a mark of 54.56 meters, earning her a Second-Team All-American honor.
Morris will finish her outdoor career for the Rams as a two-time discus All-American as she looks forward to her final year of indoor eligibility next winter.
Scoring 15 total points at the NCAA Championship meet, a 18th place finish is the highest the Ram women have ever finished as a team as well with three different Rams scoring including Hawkins, Morris and Mya Lesnar.
