Mitchel secures Rams' best individual finish at Griak since 2017

MINNEAPOLIS – Colorado State cross country traveled to Minnesota to compete at the Roy Griak Invitational on Friday, with the men and women each taking home fourth-place finishes highlighted by a pair of top-five individual placements on both sides.

On the men's side, Lars Mitchel led the Rams with a second-place individual finish by clocking a time of 25:01.1. Mitchel recorded the highest finish by any Ram at the prestigious Griak Invitational since Jerrell Mock won the meet in 2017. The graduate student now has a pair of second-place finishes this season, also finishing runner-up at the Wyoming Invite to start the year.

Joining Mitchel in the top 15 was Michael Mooney – a 2022 All-Mountain West runner – who is competing in his final season after missing the 2023 campaign due to injuries. Mooney surged in the late stages of the race, jumping 21 spots up the leaderboard across the final 3,000 meters.

On the women's side, it was Anna Petr and Quinn McConnell leading the way once again. Petr clocked a 21:42.9, good for a fifth-place individual finish, and following closely behind was McConnell who ran a 21:45.5 and placed seventh. Kensey May was the third Ram to finish in the top 20, running a 22:11.5.

Up next for CSU cross country is the Roadrunner Invite tomorrow morning in Denver. Those Rams who did not run at the Griak will have the chance to sharpen their skills ahead of the Colorado Springs XC Open on Oct. 11.
