Added experience on the tower a bonus for young Rams

RIVERSIDE, Calif.  – There is no place close for the Rams to practice the event, so Colorado State's divers take the opportunities as they come on the platform.

Friday was the second chance of the season, with freshmen Riley Lee and Makenna Post both earning points Friday at the Lancers Diving Invitational at the California Baptist campus.

Lee placed 12th and Post 13th as both made the finals and improved their scores from the preliminary round. Lee went from 170.80 to 179.65, while Post improved from 127.50 to 132.65. Both of them have simple dive sets for the tower, which CSU diving coach Chris Bergere is slowly trying to improve as the season progresses.

"Riley was again steady and consistent in her performance. She does have some potential to be a much better platform diver with continued exposure and experience," Bergere said. "We are already planning on some more difficult dives for her future in the platform diving events.  Riley is capable of performing some of the more difficult dives and she is willing to try them.  We are hoping to try some of the new dives this week while we are here training in California and have platforms available."

For Lee, it was the second consecutive day she placed after opening the event Thursday with a strong showing on the 3-meter. For Post, it was her first placing in college. For both, their scores were personal bests.

With platform being rather new to her, Bergere believes every positive experience will help boost her confidence.

"Makenna did perform her easy dives well and that is very encouraging. She has much more  ability than she realizes," he said. "With continued training, maturity and confidence she can place better in competitions. I was pleased with today's efforts by both these athletes. They both have a bright future as long as they continue to develop and mature as athletes."

The invitational concludes Saturday (12 p.m.) with the 1-meter event. An hour later, the swimmers will square off against San Diego and San Diego State at USD.
