Team Embarks on Winter Trip
1/8/2025 10:40:00 AM | Women's Swimming & Diving
Divers start action at CBU; swimmers close at San Diego
FORT COLLINS  – The next month is about preparation, and annually, the winter trip sets up the finishing process.
Â
Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team will head to southern California this week and split up, hitting a pair of competitions, then hang back in the sunshine for training and team building to kick off an active month for the team.
Â
The divers will spend Jan. 9-11 competing at the Lancer Diving Invitational (hosted by California Baptist) in Riverside, Calif. On their final day of competing, the swimmers will hit the lanes against San Diego and San Diego State in a 16-event meet scored invitational style. For coach Christopher Woodard, the trip signifies a key stepping point in the season.
Â
"One, it's just to race. Much like them, I get addicted to watching racing, and when you haven't seen it from most of them in nearly two months, it's good to put that behind you and get back to racing," Woodard said. "There's two things: One, we've hammered away at race strategy all year long. Now what I'm looking for is them taking ownership. There's a lot of instructing the first half of the season, and there will continue to be a lot of instruction, but the second half of the year when we're swimming sets, it's not for them to ask questions but to think, how do I execute this set according to my race strategy. It's them taking ownership, and from our end, it's keeping attitudes high, because this portion of the season, there can be some ebbs and flows."
Â
The divers will compete on one board each day, seeing some top-flight competition in the meet, including entrants from USD and SDSU at the Lancers Aquatics Center. The swimmers will compete at the USD Sports Center Pool, both of which are outdoor facilities. Most of the team last competed at the Hawkeye Invitational at the end of November, while five Rams -- Erin Dawson, Skyler Lyon, Lexie Trietley, Tess Whineray and Maya White – raced at the U.S. Open the first week of December.
Â
The Rams have some things to build off of, hitting a handful of NCAA B cuts at the Hawkeye Invite, something no one on the team accomplished until the Mountain West Championships the year prior. In addition, a host of others have nailed down personal bests early this season.
Â
"It can be tough to manage that message. One of the first things we did was put up a quote by Mike Krzyzewski (former Duke basketball coach) that 'if you're always focused on the outcome we're losing, but if we've focused on the process and doing our absolute best, win, lose or draw we will have accomplished something.' Don't think about our 1-3 record or the close losses, that's behind us. Think about what's in front of us. It's process, process, process."
Â
The trip – which will end with a handful of training days and team bonding exercises – kicks off a flurry of activity. A week later, it's a four-team dual at Air Force, followed a week later by back-to-back meets with Northern Colorado (road) and Colorado School of Mines (senior day at home). The divers finish the month at the Air Force Invitational.
