Rams Close Dual Season This Weekend

Program to honor six seniors Saturday at Moby Pool
FORT COLLINS  – With a final flurry, the dual season wraps this weekend with a rival, some fun and the beginning of some goodbyes.
Â
Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team will travel to Greeley on Friday (4 p.m.) to take on Northern Colorado, then host Colorado School of Mines on Saturday at Moby Pool (11 a.m.) on Senior Day. The Rams will honor six swimmers – Maisy Barbosa, Emily Chorpening, Katie Flynn, Skyler Lyon, Rylee O'Neil and Maya White – in a ceremony starting at 10:40 a.m. The dual itself will be filled with some twists.
Â
"It's going to be a total tempo shift; it will be a complete 180," CSU coach Christopher Woodard said. "Friday, we know UNC, as everyone on the Front Range does, UNC always brings their best against us. We have to be prepared not only for their top dogs, but also their second and third spots, because they swim pretty tight with us. The last two weeks we've rallied really well and swam well, so I expect nothing but their best.
Â
"Saturday we'll shift gears completely, due largely to School of Mines willingness to engage us with something totally different. Off events, different relays and mystery events."
Â
The Rams swept a trifecta of duals last weekend at Air Force, improving their dual mark to 4-3 on the season. The Rams most definitely enter the two duals with the intention of staying on the positive side of the ledger, and a five-dual win streak would provide the ideal setup for the Mountain West Championships in Houston, Feb. 19-22.
Â
The Bears enter the dual 3-4, coming off a loss to Air Force. Historically, Colorado State has fared well in the dual, holding a 40-3 series edge. There will be a live stream of the dual.
Â
Saturday, the mood will change a bit with an emotional sendoff prior to the start of a dual where the relays are not on the competition chart (a 300-yard individual medley and a 300 IM crescendo, all with just three legs, as well as a 500 crescendo event to close). The rest of the events are part of a normal lineup, but only three will be known to the entrants – the 50, 100 and 500 freestyles. The other six events are "mystery events," where swimmers will line up behind the blocks, then a coach will draw an event out of the hat. In essence, a breaststroke specialist may find themselves drawing a 200 butterfly.
Â
There's a bit of fun involved, but for Woodard, the format carries a not-so-subliminal challenge to his squad.
Â
"This gives us an opportunity to do something different and fun, and hopefully send them out on a high note," Woodard said. "You have to be flexible. I expect to see more of the fight that I saw last Saturday. I like the mystery events for that very reason. Quite often in our sport, we tend to be highly organized and lay things out well in advance. It's great for a season plan. It also reinforces most everything is known and under control. This is not under control. I like that it may allow us to see how people handle that. If it's a complete unknown, you're going to go with whatever you're strongest at. If all of a sudden, I miss a turn on the 100 back and I'm not a backstroker, but I do have great underwaters, OK, I'm going to go to my legs. That's something you can transfer to your other races. My hope is they get uncomfortable and find a way."
Â
Â
There will be no diving on Saturday, but that group of Rams will get a final competition the following week at the Air Force Diving Invitational.
