Underclassmen shine on both sides

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Colorado State cross-country made the trek to the Midwest to the Hoosier State for the toughest test of the season at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invite on Friday. The women's team finished the race in 10th while the men finished 16th as a group.

  • The youth showed strong for both teams, but particularly the women's side as four of the top five finishers for Colorado State were underclassmen. Freshman Tatum Berg finished in the top 50 competitors with a personal best 5k of 17:08.7. Fellow freshman Ruby Schwelm finished just outside the top 70 runners with her 17:20.2.

  • The men's side had two debutants on the season with Chris Henry and Jackson Barma, both of whom finished 60th and 62nd, respectively. Freshman Parker Westermann also shined for CSU running a 24:21.7, over a minute faster than his 8K debut just a couple weeks back at the Roadrunner Invite.

  • Many Rams set personal bests on the day including Shea Volkmer and Abigail Petr, with today's marks sitting more than a minute faster than each of their previous personal bests. Allison Pippert also joined them in this club, finishing with a 17:12.8 making her the second Ram across the line and good enough for a top 60 finish.

  • It was a coming out party for many Rams running under Colorado State colors for the first time. Six runners – Adeline Barker, Barna, Sierra Cornett, Armie Lacefield, Schwelm and Jonas Scudamore – all made their cross-country debuts.

Looking Ahead

  • Cross country is back in action a week from today at the UCCS XC Open (Oct 10th). The event has been a staple on the Rams schedule and serves as a warm-up for the Pre-National Invite the week after.
