Rams’ Two-Headed Monster Dispatches Lopes

11/20/2025 8:49:00 PM | Volleyball

Jameson, Wilson drill 19 kills each on record night

As a coach, memorable nights can be created watching their squad go toe-to-toe with a foe, especially when a match tilts in your favor.

The way Thursday night played out for Colorado State's Emily Kohan, it was just as enjoyable watching two Rams – Halle Jameson and Eve Wilson -- battle it out against each other, a sure sign her team was in control in what became a four-set victory over Grand Canyon at Moby Arena, 22-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-15.

"I don't think Eve or Hallie cares how to get it done if somebody's getting it done, right? And they help each other out because when they're in the front row together, say our rotation three, if they're clamping on Eve and it opens up Hallie, then that's a win for both of them," Kohan said. "Our best performances are when we've got multiple people doing really well, and I think they like to kind of pull the block for each other just as much as they get the kill."

The freshman Jameson tied her career best with 19 kills on the night, hitting a blistering .643 on just 28 swings. Meanwhile, Wilson matched her from the middle (one shy of her season best) while hitting .581.

There are big scoreboards in the corners of the arena, so they know where to find the numbers. A little competition among Rams (19-8 overall, 13-4 Mountain West) isn't a bad thing.

"I think I am aware, yeah. And we know that together we can do a really good job," said Jameson, who leads the team with nine double-doubles after registering a team-leading 14 digs. "I just think we work it out. We want to do the best we can. We come out every game wanting it to be our best game so that we can perform courageously. So, I think we're aware of it."

Aware, but in a good way. There are nights when a setter needs to spread the wealth for an offense to be effective. Then there was Thursday, when Erin Dibec's keen awareness to fuel the two hottest flames in the arena paid off with 46 assists and the team hitting .444 as a group, the second-best mark in program history in a four-game match.

The Lopes came in with a reputation of being a good blocking team, leading the Mountain West in the category and ranking in the top 20 nationally. The Rams sullied it, as Grand Canyon had three all night, and those didn't come until the fourth set.

For the most part, the Rams were swinging relaxed and rather unabated in their intentions. Outside of the blocks, Colorado State was extremely clean on offense, with just six unforced hitting errors on 117 attacks.

"I think especially rounding up and getting to the top of the tournament, we wanted to be playing clean volleyball," Wilson said. "We've been able to connect really well. And then so, I think they had a good blocking team. We were aware of that and trying to maneuver around that and stay as sharp as possible. We just outhit them."

By a good margin. The Lopes finished at .196 and that included a .349 mark in the opening set. The Rams were lethal then too, but they just weren't as sharp on serve receive and passing as they were the final three sets.

Jameson may have known where her numbers stacked up with Wilson on the night, but Kohan figures she may have also had an eye GCU's Bella Nunez, another freshman who just so happened to have won four Freshman of the Week honors from the league.

Maybe, just maybe, Kohan pondered, Jameson feels she could have won a few of those.

"She wants the team to win. She's been a little -- I don't know if offended is the right word here -- that she doesn't get freshman of the week, and I think there's a lot of weeks where that kid deserves freshman of the week," Kohan said. "In my opinion, she deserves freshman of the year for this conference. The freshman on GCU has won that award quite a bit, and I think there's a little bit of personal motivation to say that she is just as deserving for some of these weekly awards."

On Thursday, she was just glad to be the freshman of the moment for the Rams, going shot for shot with Wilson. While the youngster came fast and furious from the pin (even once from the back row), Wilson went right at the Lopes or just slid right on by.

"They're a really good blocking team but we just have so many different options and so many hitters who can put the ball away," Jameson said. "It's hard to play against a team like that and just not know who to block. So, it's great that I have amazing hitters around me like Eve. If they want to go on Eve, then I might not have a block. I'm getting more confident, getting more comfortable. Erin just gives me amazing balls."

It was a victory which put the Rams a step closer to locking down the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Mountain West tournament in Las Vegas.  The week will be packed with pressure, the field of six knowing only one of them is headed to the NCAA Tournament.

That will be the team standing at the end. Wilson likes their chances, especially after seeing how they approached Thursday's task.

"We've got to work on starting strong in that first set, but I think it's good for us to like have adversity and push through, especially going into next week," Wilson said. "I think this team is capable of a lot."

Particularly when a pair of Rams are trying to match each other, one terminal swing after another.
