Rams fall to Aggies in straight sets

LAS VEGAS — Colorado State volleyball ended its 50th season and final year in the Mountain West conference with a loss to Utah State in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19, at The Pavilion on Saturday in the Mountain West Championship match. Even with the loss, the Rams tallied 38 kills and 10 block assists.

The first set saw Utah State jump to an early lead, though both teams started evenly matched. The Rams made a push midway through, highlighted by kills from Kekua Richards and Eve Wilson, closing the gap to 5-4. However, the Aggies countered with a strong offensive run to solidify their advantage. A late surge by Colorado State featured key plays from Halle Jameson and Jazen DeBina, who recorded four kills in the match, surpassing their season average of 2.95. Despite these efforts, Utah State held its ground to take the set 25-16.

In the second set, Colorado State stumbled out of the gate, trailing 2-0 after a service ace and an attack error. They managed to stay within reach, capitalizing on Utah State's service errors. The Rams closed the gap to 7-9 with consecutive points, including a kill by Erin Debiec.

Later in the set, the Rams rallied to tie it up at 11-11, thanks to a service ace from Maria Brun. Brun's standout performance included three service aces, exceeding her season average of 1.17. Nevertheless, Utah State regained momentum, with a decisive kill by Mara Stiglic extending their lead. The set ended with Utah State edging it out 25-20, despite Colorado State's efforts to catch up.

In the third set, Colorado State aimed to shift momentum with a series of solid plays, including a kill by Brun that narrowed the gap to 10-12. The Rams kept the pressure on with two consecutive service aces from Brun, bringing the score to 11-12. Despite their determination, Utah State maintained control, wrapping up the set with a 25-19 win. The match concluded with Utah State on top.

Richards led the Rams with nine kills on 20 attempts, playing a pivotal role in the offensive effort. Debiec orchestrated the attack with 31 assists, ensuring smooth ball distribution. Brun contributed 11 kills and three service aces, showcasing her versatility. Aine Doty anchored the defense with nine digs, proving her effectiveness in the backcourt.

Richards and Debiec were both named to the Mountain West All-Tournament team following the match, marking the first tournament team accolade for both athletes.

Colorado State will finish its season and look ahead to next year's exciting inaugural PAC-12 season.
