National champion shot putter named one of league’s top female athletes of the outdoor season
FORT COLLINS – The legendary resume of Mya Lesnar grew even longer on Thursday as the Colorado State thrower was named a Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
Â
Lesnar and Fresno State thrower Cierra Jackson were both deemed the top female track and field athletes of the season in a vote by the league coaches. Lesnar's recognition comes a day removed from being named a semifinalist for The Bowerman Award, which honors the top collegiate track and field athlete each season.
Â
The outdoor season was one to remember for the senior Ram as she won each of the seven shot put competitions she entered, none more important than the NCAA Outdoor Championships in which she captured the second shot put national title of her career. Lesnar became the third athlete in CSU track and field history to capture two national titles (Mostafa Hassan, Bryan Berryhill), and the second to win one indoor and one outdoor (Berryhill).
Â
The Ram thrower continued to dominate at the conference level as well, as Lesnar bested the field by nearly three feet at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships, securing her fourth-straight conference shot put crown when accounting for both indoor and outdoor conference meets.
Â
Lesnar was the national favorite for the majority of the outdoor season, thanks in large part to a historic performance in the final home meet of her career. The Doug Max Invitational was also dubbed as Lesnar's "One Last Shot" at breaking the facility record, but the Minnesota native had her sights set on more as she launched a throw of 19.60 meters/64-feet-3.75. The mark stands as the fifth-best throw in collegiate history and makes Lesnar the No. 3 performer in the NCAA record book.
Â
Lesnar was the only women's athlete to reach the 19-meter mark throughout the course of the season, including her first throw of 19.01m at Hayward Field which set the tone on her run to the national title. Adding additional proof of her dominance, Lesnar's second-best throw at nationals of 18.87 would also have captured the gold medal.
