Colorado State caps off week six with two five-set wins on the road

LOGAN, Utah — Colorado State volleyball outlasted Utah State 3-2 (24-26, 25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 15-12) on Saturday. CSU totaled 14 blocks and held on in the fifth set despite being outhit .176 to .112 for the match.

After the teams traded points and brief leads early, the Rams moved in front 11-7 behind Halle Jameson's service ace, Eve Wilson's kill and ace, and a Utah State attack error. A Sofia Zabjek kill pushed CSU to 14-9, but the Aggies scored four straight to pull within 14-13 before a service error, bad set and Jameson kill gave the Rams a 17-13 advantage. CSU still led 22-19 after Jameson put down an Erin Debiec set, but Utah State scored the next five points, tying the set at 22-22 and reaching set point at 24-22 with blocks on consecutive Rams attacks. Kekua Richards and Zabjek answered with kills to tie it at 24-24, but Olivia Ruy followed with a kill and Lily LaFlesch served an ace to give the Aggies the set, 26-24.

CSU recovered from a 7-4 deficit in the second set with five straight points, getting a Maria Brun kill, a Debiec kill and two blocks involving Wilson to move ahead 9-7. After the Rams later held a 13-10 lead, Utah State answered with six of the next seven points to go in front 16-14. Zabjek's kill started a four-point CSU response, and Jameson added a kill before teaming with Wilson on a block for an 18-16 lead. The Rams reached set point at 24-21 on a Richards kill, and after the Aggies cut it to 24-23, Zabjek finished the set with a kill for a 25-23 win.

After USU built a 6-2 lead, CSU scored five straight, with Brun, Richards and Zabjek supplying kills before two Aggie attack errors put the Rams ahead 7-6. CSU moved in front 12-8 on kills by Jameson and Zabjek and a Utah State error, but the Aggies answered with four straight, including an Olivia Tukuafu ace and a Sophie Scott/Olivia Ruy block, to tie it 12-12. The set stayed level through 15-15 before Utah State moved ahead 17-15, and the Rams came back to tie it 18-18 on a USU service error and attack error. After exchanges carried the score to 22-22, Brun recorded consecutive kills for 23-22 and 24-22, and Sophie Stephenson served an ace to close CSU's 25-22 set win.

The Rams traded the first six points with Utah State before the home side used kills from Olivia Ruy and Solia Angilau to move ahead 6-3. CSU pulled within 6-5 on a Zabjek kill and a Aggie attack error, but Utah State rebuilt the gap to 10-5 and later led 17-10. The Rams answered with four straight points, getting kills from Brun, Jameson and Richards before an Olivia Ruy attack error made it 17-14. Utah State responded by pushing the lead back to 23-16, and after a CSU block by Wilson and Debiec, USU closed the set with kills from Sophie Scott and Ruy for a 25-17 finish.

After Utah State scored the first point, CSU answered with kills by Brun and Hayden Grimes and later used a Debiec kill and a block by Richards and Brun to move ahead 6-2. Utah State came back behind three Sami Blackett kills and tied the set at 6-6, but a service error and Brun's ace put the Rams back in front 8-6 before the Aggies evened it again at 8-8. CSU broke a 9-9 tie with consecutive Utah State attack errors, including blocks involving Zabjek, Wilson and Debiec, and pushed the margin to 12-9. Wilson and Brun added late kills, and after Utah State got within 14-12 on a service error, Brun finished the set with a kill from Debiec for a 15-12 CSU win.
