Rams Fend Off Cowgirls in Laramie

CSU endures furious second-half comeback attempt to complete season sweep of Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Colorado State saw a 20-point first half lead cut all the way down to four in the fourth quarter, but the Rams rallied together to secure a 62-48 road win over rival Wyoming on Saturday afternoon.

This completed the regular-season sweep of the Cowgirls in the final season of the two teams competing in the Mountain West. It also marked CSU's first regular-season sweep of Wyoming since the 2020-21 season.

The Rams (21-7, 12-5 MW) put together a dominant second quarter that put them in front of the Cowgirls (9-17, 6-11 MW) by as much as 20 points in the period before taking a 36-18 lead into halftime. Defense was dominant throughout the first half as Colorado State kept Wyoming in single digits for the first 15 minutes of the game.

In a rare turn of events, it was CSU that was bested in the third quarter as Wyoming rattled off a 20-point period, putting the Cowgirls right back in the thick of things. A five-minute scoreless streak to open the fourth quarter saw a 10-point Colorado State lead cut down to just four points, forcing a timeout by head coach Ryun Williams.

Following the timeout, Colorado State took the court with a newfound confidence and attacked basket from multiple angles to spark a 10-0 scoring run and put the Rams back in control. CSU earned enough stops on the defensive end down the stretch to close out the game, completing the Green and Gold's regular season sweep of the Border War.

Colorado State was balanced in its attack as four players reach double figures, led by Madleyn Bragg  and Lexus Bargesser who notched 15 apiece. Following closely behind was Kloe Froebe and Brooke Carlson who each notched 14, the latter of which also finishing with five assists. Marta Leimane was the only other Ram in the scorebook, tallying four points.

How It Happened
The game tipped off with Henna Sandvik putting the Cowgirls on the board first at 7:07 after a slow start from both teams. The Rams quickly answered back with Bragg sinking a jumper and then a layup, assisted by Froebe, to grab a 4-2 lead. Bragg was aggressive all night, attempting a season-high 13 field goals. Froebe added a layup at 5:08 and Bargesser hit two free throws at 5:42, extending the Rams' lead. By the end of the first, the Rams were up 15-8, capitalizing on Wyoming's early mistakes, even as Sandvik added another jumper with 37 seconds left.

In the second quarter, the Rams continued their offensive onslaught. Carlson coolly sank two free throws at 8:52, followed by a Froebe three-pointer at 8:06, assisted by Carlson, pushing the score to 20-8. Bargesser fueled the momentum with a layup and jumper, while Wyoming struggled to find their footing, managing a jumper from Heidur Karlsdottir and a three from Peyton Wohlford. Malene Pedersen's layup with 5 seconds left brought Wyoming closer, but the Rams still led 36-18 at halftime.

Wyoming's Payton Muma tried to rally in the third, hitting a three at 8:20 and another later on. Despite her efforts, Bragg's consistent scoring kept the Rams ahead, including a layup with 56 seconds left in the quarter. Jane Rumpf closed the quarter with a three, but the Rams still held a 48-38 lead, with both teams emphasizing paint play.

In the fourth, the Rams went cold on offense and missed their first seven attempts, allowing Wyoming to cut the lead down to four on back-to-back threes from deep. A tough second-chance layup from Froebe broke CSU out of its spell and sparked a double-digit scoring run that ultimately helped the Rams secure the road win.
