Axelman, Dawson and Whineray capture two each

FORT COLLINS  – Led by a record-setting performance from Tess Whineray, Colorado State accumulated seven All-Mountain West honors at the conference championships in Houston as the league announced the team Wednesday.

Whineray won the 200-yard backstroke title in a school- and conference championship-record time of 1:52.82, earning automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships in Atlanta from March 18-21. Additionally, the junior was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.73 which stands as the second fastest in MW history.

Two other swimmers – Erin Dawson and Mia Axelman – both earned all-conference in a pair of events. Dawson's came in the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley, while Axelman earned hers in the 100 and 200 freestyles.

Freshman diver Sydney Ovesen made all-conference on the 3-meter springboard.

Dawson, a fifth-year, has now earned eight all-conference awards in her career. Whineray now has six, having never finished less than fifth in an event at conference. For Axelman and Ovesen, the recognition was their first.

To earn all-conference, a swimmer or diver has to place in the top eight of an event, while relays must post a top-three finish.
