CSU Dominates Field Events in Day One of Outdoor Season

Rams win three out of six Friday events

Pueblo – Colorado State Track and Field started the 2026 outdoor season strong on Friday at the Dr. Dan Capriogilo Early Bird Invitational.  The event saw the return of Ismael Dembele and the debut of javelin throwers, Mackenzii Phillips, Jack Olsen and Jet Van Der Heijden.

  • Dembele entered as the sole Ram in the triple jump and picked up where he left off last May with four jumps over 50 feet. Dembele's top jump was a 15.79-meters/51-feet-9.75, nearly reaching his personal best which already sits as CSU's program record. Dembele finished first in the meet, winning by over three feet.  
  • The Rams made a focus of adding to their javelin squad over the off-season and saw that come out today. Brown transfer Phillips finished second on the day with a personal best throw of 47.60/156-2. Phillip's throw is already the third best mark in CSU history. Following Phillips was freshman Van Der Heijden who came in fifth on the day. The Netherlands native already holds the fifth best javelin toss in school history at 45.60-149-7. 
  • The men's hammer throw squad was led by sophomore Adam Hellbom who finished with a mark of 64.33/211-0. Hellbom already holds the fifth best throw in school history. Following the Swede was Cameron Kalaf at 60.80/199-5 in second, then Kyle Bigley at 55.79/183-0 in fifth. Alex Jensen finished seventh place, recording a pr of 52.58/172-6. 
  • In the men's javelin Kalaf finished fourth place with Olsen in seventh. Olsen enters the CSU record book at 58.00/190-3 in 19th all time. 
  • The women's hammer throw saw two Rams reach the finals in Klaire Kovatch and Erin Brown. Kovatch finished first overall with a personal best of 56.46/185-3. 
Looking Ahead 
Throwers will continue onto Saturday, this time joined by pole vaulters and track events. CSU has a collection of athletes competing around the board with action starting at 10:00 AM MT.
