Match first in a run against ranked foes
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Starting one of the toughest stretches of the season, and doing so without a regular in the lineup, a bid for an upset was on the board.
Â
After taking an early lead, Colorado State fell short of the goal in a 4-1 loss to No. 75 Grand Canyon on Friday, the start of two successive matches against ranked foes. The Rams sit at 6-14 overall, 2-7 in Mountain West play.
Â
The Rams took a positive first step by claiming the doubles point. The pair of Hanna Haber and Diana Lizarazo set up the opportunity with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot and CSU's top tandem of Sorcha Caves and Annika Planinsek used a 6-3 decision to vault the Rams out in front.
Â
Grand Canyon struck back with a trio of straight-sets victories in singles (at Nos. 2, 4 and 5), with the remaining three matches heading to a third set, and the Lopes closed the victory with a win at No. 4.
Â
Colorado State returns home Sunday (10:30 a.m.) for a second consecutive matchup with a ranked team as No. 40 San Diego State visits the CSU Tennis Complex. The Senior Day event will honor a pair of Rams, Luana Avelar and Hanna Haber, with pre-match festivities.
