Dual comes down to final singles contest
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Pushing toward extending a winning streak, Colorado State came up short at New Mexico as the Lobos pulled out the final set in the deciding match in a 4-3 Mountain West victory on Thursday afternoon.
Â
The Rams are now 6-12 on the season, 2-5 in conference play.
Â
For the second consecutive match, the Rams shortened their road to success by claiming the doubles point, picking up wins from the edges as the No. 3 squad of Stella Morgan and Logan Voeks posted a 6-4 win, setting up the top pairing of Luana Avelar and Sorcha Caves to seal the point with a dramatic 7-6 (7) decision.
Â
The drama was far from finished, with every singles position involved in the final score, half of the matches needing a third set. The dual stood at 2-all after Dylan Voeks won in straight sets at No. 6 singles.
Â
The Lobos inched closer to victory with a victory at No. 5 singles, then Colorado State's Luana Avelar put the final touches on her 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 decision over Bente Vandeputte at the top spot. At No. 3, the hosts took the final point remaining when Ana Veroux beat Caves 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
Â
Colorado State will complete the weekend of competition with a Saturday road match at Air Force (12 p.m.)
