Ram track & field legend a part of 61st induction class

DENVER – Colorado State track & field legend Wendy Koenig was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame this past week in Denver as a part of the organization's 61st induction class.

Koenig, one of the greatest athletes in CSU program history, carving a career as a highly accomplished middle-distance runner. A three-time All-American at CSU, Koenig set the program's top marks in the 800 meter and 1,500 while also claiming the state collegiate record in the 800 when she graduated.

Koenig's impressive career began before she stepped on campus as she competed in the 800 at the 1972 Munich Olympic games just after graduating from Estes Park High School. Koenig was the winner of the 800 at the 1973 USA Track & Field Championships, and in 1976 qualified for her second Olympic games in Montreal. The Ram legend finished third in the 800 semifinals with a time of 1:59.91, becoming only the second American woman to break the two-minute mark. Koenig went on to finish seventh overall and was the top American in the competition.

After earning her degree from Colorado State, she has remained active in her community. First elected in 2010, Koenig served two terms on the Estes Park Town Board from 2010 to 2017, including serving as Mayor Pro Tem from 2013 to 2017, and was elected mayor, serving from 2020 to 2024.

Koenig was honored along with Denver Broncos defensive back Steve Foley, Denver Nuggets guard Lafayette "Fat" Lever, Colorado Buffalo's quarterback Kordell Stewart who went on to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, and the Baltimore Ravens, Olympic gold medal tennis player Gigi Fernández, and University of Denver basketball player Harry Hollines who went on to play for the Phoenix Suns.

The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame began in 1964. The first class was named in 1965, honoring football player Earl "Dutch" Clark, boxer Jack Dempsey, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Byron "Whizzer" White. With the 2026 class, 298 athletes have been inducted into the organization.
